Understanding Hair Type/Coil Pattern, Texture and Relaxer Service

In the late 1800s, a man by the name of Garret A. Morgan was known to have created what we know today as a relaxer. Although, this has been reformulated over and over since the early 1900s, Farouk Systems has now created a healthier and more prestige formulation called CHI Deep Brilliance Olive & Monoi Silk Conditioning Relaxer.

Hair relaxing rearranges the structure of curly hair, reforming it into a smoother and straighter texture. Relaxers permanently alter the structure of the hair. It can range from straight with a slight wave, known to stylist as a Type 1 to an undefined curl pattern known to stylist as a Type 4. This is a system that decodes all types of textured hair and derived from Oprah’s stylist, Andre Walker, in the late 1990s. This common way of characterizing textured hair is still being used today.

Coil Pattern

The hairs coil pattern is the shape of the hair strand. Most coiled hair has a fine texture, which makes the hair crisscross creating ununiformed patterns. It also has low elasticity and a tendency to knot easily.

Straight to Slightly Wavy Hair 1A - C

Textured hair that is straight to slightly wavy can be considered Type 1A to 1C hair. It is shiner than other textures of hair and more manageable. Yet, it is harder for this type of hair to hold a curl without product use. It is recommended for most of these hair types to set the hair.

Normally, there is no need for a chemical straightening service to be performed. People who tend to have this hair type are often times Caucasians

Wavy Hair 2A – C

Textured hair that is wavy is classified as Type 2A to 2C. The way that wavy hair is structured many say that it is dormant between straight and curly hair. The wave pattern may also differ from strand to strand, yet it is still oval in shape. The color can also play a role in the shape of the hair strand, see diagram 10 - 8. It also imparts sheen, more than curly hair, but less than straight hair. The further down the wavy spectrum you go the less sheen the hair will impart. Wavy hair is typically more prone to frizz. Type 2 A - C hair coils are wavy and can easily alternate from straight back to curly with styling unless a chemical service is performed.

Curly Hair 3A – C

Textured hair that is curly is considered Type 3A to 3C. By slightly pulling one strand of hair, you will notice that the strand resembles an S or Z pattern. However, the coil pattern is defined and similar to a new or stretched phone cord. People who tend to have this hair type are often times, Caucasians and Multi-Cultural races. Type 3 A - C hair is more resistant than type 1 and 2 hair coils.

Yet, it can still be styled from straight back to curly unless a chemical service is performed. This type of hair can become dull easily with the lack of moisture and proper maintenance.

Highly Textured hair is considered extremely curly hair and ranges from 4A to 4C. There is a misconception that highly textured hair does not grow and is unmanageable.

This is far from the truth. Highly textured hair is considered fragile and delicate in nature. It needs careful a lot of moisture and a lot of attention to flourish. It shape is oval and flatter than other hair types. Type 4 A - C hair is more resistant than type 1 and 2 hair coils. It is harder to style without softening the cuticle.
